It was Halloween, my favorite holiday, and yet, I woke with a heavy heart. My throat was coarse from crying and I was dehydrated. I turned my head, blinking the sleep away, and saw the cat sleeping next to me. Maisieâs voice echoed in my head, âIâm your sister.â Did I really have a sisterâa sibling I never knew? Was this some ploy to get me to believe she was innocent of the recent crimes? That seemed drastic, even for her. If it was true, why hadnât she told me months ago? There had been so many opportunities for her to tell me. Hell, she couldâve written me a letter.
Sitting up, I watched the cat stretch on the bed and open his mouth in a big yawn. He rolled on to his back then on to his belly, stretching once more before jumping to the floor. The pads of his feet made soft pitter-patter noises as he walked down the steps of the loft. At least he seemed to have slept well.
It was kind of comforting knowing he had slept next to me after I had cried myself to sleep last night. Maybe he really was my familiar. My familiar. It had a nice ring to it, even if he liked Maisie. Perhaps he was trying to tell me to accept her, but right now all I could think about was that I had been alone for twenty-eight years and now I possibly had a sister who seemed to have been just as alone. That made my heart ached, knowing we both had felt the same pain throughout our entire childhood.
I remembered what she yelled when I fired her, âNot everyone had a perfect life like you.â Now I understood what she meant. She thought Iâd had a different life than her. She probably thought I had been adopted and raised by a loving family. I often dreamed about it, but it never happened.
How had she found out about me? Andrew had never mentioned two children, though he hadnât mentioned much about anything. Talking had been a chore and he hadnât been too forthcoming about who myâour mom had been. He kept brushing it off and telling me weâd, âTalk about it later.â Later never came. He took that secret to his grave.
I changed into a clean outfit and sat back down on the bed to tie my boots. I was feeling confused. Hell, I was feeling a lot of things but confusion was pushing everything else to the side. In one week the most bizarre occurrences of my life had all combined, one right after the other. Something strange was going on in Wildewood and I felt like the epicenter of it all.
Hearing the cat scratch at something, I stomped down the stairs. He probably wanted to go outside. As I got to the bottom of the steps, I saw that he was raised on his hind legs swatting at the doorknob of the closet door. This wasnât peculiar at all, I snorted a laugh and opened it.
